Stake Mines Tips for Beginners 2026

Mines is one of the most flexible games at Stake — you control the risk directly. Here's what beginners need to know before they start clicking.

How Mines Works

Mines is played on a 5×5 grid of 25 tiles. Before each round you choose how many mines to hide (from 1 to 24) and place your bet. Each tile you click is either a gem (safe) or a mine. Hit a mine and you lose your bet. Click gems and cash out before hitting a mine to collect your winnings.

The payout multiplier grows with every safe tile you reveal. More mines hidden in the grid means higher multipliers for each successful click — but also a higher chance of hitting one.

Choosing Your Mine Count: The Core Decision

The number of mines you choose determines the volatility of the game. Here's how to think about it:

1–2 Mines
Low Risk

Safe tiles give small multipliers. Good for learning the game and maintaining bankroll.

3–5 Mines
Medium Risk

Balanced approach. Each safe tile pays more, but the grid becomes noticeably dangerous.

10+ Mines
High Risk

Very high multipliers per tile. Expect frequent complete losses — this requires significant bankroll.

When to Cash Out: The Hardest Part

The most common beginner mistake in Mines is not cashing out soon enough. As you reveal more gems, the multiplier grows — and so does the temptation to click one more tile. But remember: each click is an independent probability event. The game doesn't get "safer" as you reveal more tiles.

A useful rule: decide your cash-out target before you start a round. If you're playing with 3 mines and planning to reveal 5 tiles, commit to that before you begin. Don't make the decision in the moment when greed is a factor.

Stake also supports Auto-Bet with an auto cash-out after a set number of tiles — this removes the emotional component entirely.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Starting with too many mines
Begin with 1–3 mines while you learn the game. High mine counts look exciting but destroy bankrolls quickly.
  • Betting a large fraction of bankroll
Keep each bet small relative to your total. Mines can give you a run of bad luck across multiple rounds.
  • Chasing losses by increasing mine count
If you lose, keep the same settings. Increasing mines to 'win it back faster' accelerates losses.
  • Not using Auto Cash-Out
Set a target tile count and let Auto-Bet handle it. Removes the temptation to click one more tile.

Using Auto-Bet in Mines

Stake's Auto-Bet panel in Mines lets you set a fixed number of tiles to reveal each round and automate the process. This is the most disciplined way to play:

  1. 1Set your mine count (e.g. 3 mines).
  2. 2Set the number of tiles to auto-reveal each round (e.g. 3 tiles).
  3. 3Set a stop-loss and stop-profit limit.
  4. 4Run the auto-bet for a set number of rounds, then review.
